Newton enlisted at Tomotley, (Tomotley was/is in Beaufort County about 15 miles Northwest

of the City of Beaufort.  It is almost midway between the towns of Pocotaligo and Gardens

Corner, not far off Hwy 17.) on March 20 1862 and served as a Private in Company C, 14th

SC Inf. The last Roll Newton was on was dated September/October, 1864. Newton was paroled:

Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865 Source:  Confederate service records  NARS,

Micro. 267,  Roll 274

Newton Jasper was 34 years of age when he enlisted at Tomotley, Greenville, SC.

According to his NARA records of "Certificate To Be Given A Soldier When He receives

A Furlough Of Indulgence" (which I take to mean a discharge), Newton was 5 Feet, 10

inches tall, Fair complected, with blue eyes, light hair and by profession, a

farmer.  Newton enlisted for a period of:  "for the war".

At a camp "near Petersburg, VA. on February 14, 1865, he received six months pay of

$108.00 at the rate of $18.00 per month".

Cited Source:  Laurens Co. Site:  Medlock, N. Jasper; Company C, 14th Regiment

South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Laurens County "Raiborn Company":

In the summer of 1861,men from all over the state of South Carolina answered the call

to aid in the defense of the Confederacy. They gathered in Columbia, South Carolina,

and there they arranged themselves into Regiments consisting of 10 companies. One such

regiment was the 14th South Carolina, consisting of men from Edgefield, Laurens,

Abbeville, Darlington, and Barnwell Counties.

The 14th SC was quartered in Aiken, South Carolina for further instruction, and was

officially organized on September 9th, 1861.They were sent to the coast in the fall,

along with the 12th and 13th regiments, under the command of Brigadier General Maxcey

Gregg.

The 14th SC regiment was involved in a short battle at Port Royal Ferry on January 1,

1862. In the spring of 1862, they were rushed northward to the battlefields of

Virginia.  There they served faithfully and honorably with the Army of Northern Virginia,

under the command of beloved General Robert E. Lee.  They fought entirely in the East,

and were at the surrender of Lee's troops at Appomattox courthouse on April 9th, 1865.

During the war, the 14th Regiment - and Gregg's/McGowan's Brigade - made a reputation as

fierce fighters.  The regiment's total loss of dead was: 224 killed in battle, and 326

who died of disease. The number who were wounded is far greater than this. This web page

is dedicated to the memory of the men who fought fiercely, suffered without complaint,

and died bravely, in the defense of their homeland.

Evelyn Medlock in TN. has letters among the brothers, and from

an attorney in Laurens, SC, about the disposition of W. R.'s

estate. Letters are dated 1935 and 1936:

    11/14/35 - From: "Brother Jim"
    RE: W. R.'s estate
Mentions Tom and Sam, in an informal letter.
In the same envelope is a somewhat formal letter from brother

"J. H.". Says he needs money from estate - wants J. M. to sign

some document. Letters are in different handwriting, but Evelyn

says the brothers were not well educated, that someone else

probably wrote one of the letters. Evelyn says she often wrote

    letters for J. M.

4/9/36 - From: Sam Medlock, Rte 1, Bear Creek, AL (Near

    Haleyville)

To: John Medlock, 708 High Street, Trenton, TN
    RE: Brother W. R.'s estate.
Enclosed were two letters from Ross D. Young, Probate Judge in

Laurens, SC, dated 12/7/35 and 12/16/35. Letters were to N. J.

Medlock, Haleyville, AL. Sam mentions brothers Jim and Tom

(Evelyn thinks Tom is half- brother who lived in St. Louis.)

Also mentioned were an Archie C. Owens and a Mr. Baldwin, in

connection with news of W. R.'s estate.

10/17/36 - From: Sam Medlock, Bear Creek, AL
    To: John
RE: Brother W. R.'s land, Ross Young, etc.
Letter is signed N. J. Medlock

Evelyn in TN. has a letter from Anna Hendrix, dated 10/17/22,

Rte 1, Boaz, AL. to; "Dear Brother". Letter mentions "Jim".

Evelyn thinks Anna and Charlsie were John Marion's sisters,

    former whole; latter, half.

Evelyn has envelope from J. T. Medlock, 2/25/13, postmarked

Booneville, MS. The envelope also contains a letter from Charlsie Baucom to Lizzie (Elizabeth

Boone Medlock)

Max Crow lived with Thomas, Wheeler and Commodore several times at the homestead in Dixie, AR.

He said that several of the Medlocks came from East TN in a covered wagon down through AL, MO,

and into AR.  He also stated that they used to sit around on the front porch and argue about

how old they were when they arrived in AR.  Source: Max Crow May 17, 1998.  Dixie is a small

farming community just outside Paragould

John is buried at the Woods Chapel Cemetery in Paragould, Greene, AR. His marker reads:

Jan. 22, 1850 - Feb. 17, 1917  AT REST.

I have personally visited the old homestead in Dixie and the home is still standing.

It has been sold to a friend of the family who is father of the local sheriff.

Notes for SARAH ADAMS "SALLIE" TATE:
All this information received from Evelyn Smith McCurley:
Sarah Adams Tate Whaley and Sallie Whaley Hurst are the same people. Sarah Adams Tate is her given name.

She was adopted by her grandfather Thomas Jefferson Whaley. Sarah's first husband was Allen Hurst. She

then married Winfred Bartow Smith before marrying Newton William Medlock. "I remember how she used to

love to make scrapbooks with poems that she liked and give them to family and friends. She also

enjoyed playing the piano." Sarah is buried at the Elmer Baptist Church Cemetery in Statesboro,

Bulloch, GA.

Evelyn McCurley:
SARAH TATE SMITH MEDLOCK
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." Psalm 23:1
Sarah (or Sally) Adams Tate was born or February 14, 1899, in Metter, Georgia, the only child of Char1es

P. and Emma Annabelle Tate. Her mother died when she was three and two years later her father passed

away. She was reared in Metter by her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Whaley, and her step-grandmother,

Elizabeth Buie Whaley. As a young girl, Sister Medlock was a talented pianist. She accompanied Methodist

Church services, and she often played for the old-time "singings" and for various community affairs in

Candler County. On September 3, 1915, Sister Sally married Bartow Smith. They were blessed with four

children: Winfred Bartow Smith, now deceased; Olivia Smith Newsome, of Statesboro; Emma Lou Newsome,

now deceased; and Charles Whaley Smith, of Statesboro. On February 28, 1935, Sister Medlock's husband

died in an automobile accident. During these years of widowhood, she bore her sorrow with patience

and dignity. She was a homemaker and a devoted, understanding mother. She kept her "heart with all

diligence," and with God's help she patiently resolved the issues of her life (Proverbs 4:23).

Thirteen years later, on April 2, 1948, she married Newton William Medlock. They lived in Whitmire,

South Carolina for several years before returning to Statesboro. Mr. Medlock died in January, 1965.
Sister Medlock united with the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church on May 11, 1958. Though she

suffered heart problems the last years of her life, she remained faithful in church attendance when

her health permitted, and her joy in hearing the gospel was evident. Her "delight" was "in the law

of the Lord" (Psalm 1:2). Through sorrow, hardships and long years of widowhood, her faith was proved

by her sweet reverence for her Lord and Savior. Through her Christian experience she had learned in

agreement with Paul, that "godliness with contentment is great gain." There was mutual joy and

satisfaction for both Sister Sally and the visitors who spent time with her. During years of confinement

at home and in nursing homes, she was content, appreciative and resourceful. Patient in infirmities,

she greatly enriched her life and the lives of others in the ways she used her talents and her time.

The many lovely scrapbooks she made and gave to her family and friends were products of the joy she

found in beloved passages of Scripture, poetry, and art. Her gifts of beautiful needlework are

treasured. She worked "willingly with her hands," "looked well to the ways of her household," and ate

"not the bread of idleness" (Proverbs 31:13,27). Sister Sally passed away on May 23, 1981, in Bulloch

Memorial Hospital. Her funeral was held at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church on May 23, 1981,

with Elder W. H. Durrence and Elder Jerry A. Newsome officiating. Her body was laid to rest in Elmer

Baptist Church cemetery in Statesboro, GA. In addition to her daughter Olivia and son Charles, Sister

Medlock is survived by thirteen grandchildren and twenty-four great -grandchildren. We extend loving

sympathy to the family, and we request that copies of this memorial be given to the family and that a

copy be placed in the church record. In Christian love, Edith Alderman, Clara Bell Anderson Mary

Janette Smith
