"A letter from
Will Matlock" -
taken from the
Bandana Crayon
of January 10,
1902,
during his stay
in the
Philippines
confirming the
death of his
brother.
Dear
Sister: Your
letter of
September 9th
received today
and was glad to
hear from you
again. Well
Annie, this is
going to be a
very difficult
letter for me to
write, as it
contains news
that hurts me,
but I will write
it the best I
can. Our
Company has been
moved to the
Samar Island as
I stated in my
last letter. On
our way here we
had to come
about 25 miles
down a river in
Bancos - native
skiffs - to take
the transport,
and the
Banco John was
in, struck
something in the
water and was
overturned. It
was loaded with
ammunition and
rations and
contained about
15 - 20
soldiers, all of
whom have
reported
except four and
John was one of
those four. It
happened Oct.
8th about nine
o'clock at
night and we
left Oct. 10th.
The water was so
high and swift
some think he
may have
caught to some
of the boxes and
floated a long
way down stream
before he could
land.
I have heard
nothing nothing
from him and I
believe he was
caught by the
stuff in the
skiff and
drowned. It is
awful, awful! I
would have
written sooner
about it, but my
company's
commander
thought they may
show up in a few
days, but too
many days have
passed
and brought no
news of him.
The last time I
saw him was
about the middle
of May - I would
have seen him in
another hour if
his boat hadn't
went down, and
just to think
that the
body may never
be recovered.
This paper was
in the wreck. I
do not know what
I will do now,
fight my way
through all
alone I guess,
for a fellow has
no friends in
the army that he
can
trust. It is as
I told the boys
in my company, I
had ten times
rather had it
been me than
John, for he has
so many friends
there that will
hate so much to
hear of this.
My life in
the Philippines
will be of no
enjoyment to me
now as I will
have to live it
alone. John
had several
letters in his
pocket for me
when the
accident
happened. I
think one of
them
was from Nora.
I got my first
letter from her
today in which
she said she had
written to
me
and enclosed one
of the Baby's
pictures. I
have not heard
from Dell yet
and don't know
what
to think of
him. I am still
in good health -
don't think I
ever had better,
but good
health will not
be much pleasure
to me now. Of
Course, grieving
will do no good,
we all
have to go some
day, sooner or
later. There is
one thing I am
proud to say, I
have quit
drinking, but
there are many
many things in
the army to ruin
a young man. I
have received
no pay in over
four months and
don't believe we
will be paid for
two months yet,
so I will
have something
over $90 coming
to me. You said
in your letter
that President
McKinley was
shot. We got
the news here as
soon as it was
done. I was in
Manila at the
time and there
was great
excitement there
over the affair,
as I suppose was
the case in the
states. My
mind is so tore
up I can't think
of anything else
to write so will
close for this
time,
hoping
this will find
you all well. I
expect to see in
your letters
that some of you
are
sick.
