JOHN MATLOCK

  

John Matlock who is believed to be John Matlock 111, was thought to have be born abt 1712 in

Hanover county VA. It is thought that he was the John who is mentioned in the deed dated July

5th 1734 when his older brother George deed to John 100 acres on a branch of Taylor's Creek,

called Charles's Swamp. John married Ann, maiden name unknown. John 111 is believed to be the

John who died Aug 7 1785 Louisa county Virginia.

 

1733 March George Matlock deeded to John Matlock Jr 100 acres on Taylor’s Creek and Charles

Swamp (William and Mary Quarterly pg 50) George sold this land for 10 pounds  “being part of

400 a granted to Edward Trotman late of Hanover, dec'd by patent. Signed, George Matlock

witness Nat Williams, Richard Henderson & John Williams.”

 

1734 July 5th George Matlock a planter of Hanover County deeded to John Matlock Jr. also of

Hanover County 100 acres on a branch of Taylor’s Creek called Charles’s Swamp; part of 400 a.

In the name of God amen I John Matlock of Louisa County old and weake and knowing the Frailty of Man That all men are appointed to die do direct this my last will and Testament in manner and for following -- Item I give all my Estate Real and personal to my wife Ann Matlock during her life and after her death my Son Zachariah Matlock is to possess and enjoy my Tract of land whereon I now live to the only use of him & his heirs forever. It is also my desire that all my other Estate be Equally divided at the death of my wife between all my Children but Elizabeth Shelton being dead its my desire that her part be Equally divided amongst her three children John, Agnes and Lucy Shelton it is also my desire that my wife Ann Matlock and son Zachariah have the management of my Estate Given under my hand and Seal this 4th day of December 1784. 1785 Aug 1 At a court held for Louisa County on Monday 1 of August 1785---

This will was this day (proved?) in Court by Zachariah Matlock one of the Executors therein named and thereupon this will was proved by the oaths of Peter Crawford, Jane Crawford and John Crawford, the witness thereto and is admitted to record and on the motion of the said Excs who made oath according to Law, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate there of in due form giving said -where upon he together with John Crawford & Peter Crawford his ----- to and acknowledged his Bon in the penalty of Law with conditions according to Law..Page 104

 

1785 Aug 8 Know all men by these presents that we  Zachariah Matlock, John Crawford, and Peter Crawford  are held and firmly Bound unto Thomas Johnson gentleman, the first trustee in the Commission of the Peace for Louisa County for and in behalf and to the Sole use and behoof of the Justices of the said County & their successors in the sum of One thousand pounds current money to be paid to the said Thomas Johnson his Executors administrators or assigns to the such payment will and truly to be made; we bind ourselves and every of us one and every of our Heirs, executors and administrators --- and ---- formly by these presents sealed with our seals and --- this 8th day of August 1785-----

 

The Condition of this obligation is such that if the above bound Zachariah Matlock, Executor of the last will and testament of Jn Matlock deceased, do make or cause to be made a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattles and credits of the said dec. which have or shall come to the hand --- or knowledge of the said Zach. Matlock or into the hands and --- of any other person or persons for him and the same to made do --- into the County Court of Louisa at such time as he shall be thereunto required by the said Court and the same goods chattles and --- and other the goods Chattles and Credits of the said deceased what at any time after shall come to the hands --- or knowledge of the said Zachariah Madlock or into the hands --- of any, other persons or person for him do will and truly administrate according to law and further do make true and just account of his ---- and doings therein where --- required by the said Court and also will and truly pay and deliver all the leguees containing and specified in the said testament as far as these goods Chattles and Credits will extent and the Law Shall charge this obligation to be void or otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
